The largest island in the world, the second largest ice sheet on the planet and the most impressive icebergs to be found on the North Pole: Greenland is a destination full of superlatives. A trip to this ice desert with its gigantic glacier fronts and astronomical blocks of ice is a phenomenal nature experience.
We start our journey in the land of the Inuit in the only inhabited settlement in Scoresbysund: Ittoqqortoormiit (Ittoqqo-what? Takes some practice ;-)). About 500 Inuits live here far away from the larger villages and towns on the west coast. They are completely enclosed by the sea ice for nine months a year: an intriguing lifestyle that we will get to know better during this trip.
Greenland has an unmistakable beauty. You’ll notice that as soon as we take you to the most beautiful corners of Scoresbysund. The solitude we experience here, and our proximity to the North Pole, will definitely inspire. This is without a doubt the ultimate photo trip for any landscape photographer who wants to explore the arctic regions with professional guidance.
We sail through beautiful landscapes and ensure that you can photograph as much as you wish. During our trip, the tundra is colored in bright yellow and red colors: a breathtaking contrast with the stark white icebergs in the fjords.
We also meet a lot of animals, so keep that lens ready! You’ll see whales, seals, muskoxes, mountain hares, different species of geese and maybe even a polar bear. In September we enjoy a beautiful low sunlight, allowing us to photograph the entire day. Nice bonus: we start the journey under a full moon, which guarantees stunning illumination during the night. We might even get to see the northern lights!
In the Scoresbysund Fjord, we are sheltered from strong northern wind. It is often even sunny and pleasant in September. Temperatures range from -5°C to + 10°C, but are expected to be between 0°C and 5°C. There shouldn’t be too much rough water, so you are not likely to experience seasickness here.
We are navigating on open waters, so solid, waterproof clothing and gloves are necessary. The apparent temperatures can be cold, especially when traveling with the zodiac. Sturdy, high, waterproof boots, a hat, scarf, sunglasses and sun cream are indispensable. The most efficient way to retain heat is to dress in thin layers.
The price includes the chartered boat Freya and the chartered flights Iceland – Greenland – Iceland! International Fights to Iceland and extra nights and meals in Iceland are not included in the price. For maximum comfort and the best photographic possibilities, we travel in a small group. This way we can guarantee more personal guidance. The ship has all the necessary equipment on board. As a participant, you are free to explore the ship and maybe even be at the helm yourself! Every day three meals of international cuisine are prepared by our cook and served as a buffet in the very pleasant dining room. There are two decks on board.
We discover the fjords with a privately chartered expedition ship: the Freya. This Swedish ship was initially used for nature research and has now been completely converted and modernized for conducting expedition cruises. The ship consists of seven large twin cabins and a beautiful lounge. We consciously travel in a small group to guarantee 100% photography comfort. The result? More space in the cabins, the dining room, the zodiac and on the deck. And above all: more personal guidance!
