Slovenia is the perfect place for this unique experience, and early spring is full of surprises, with new migratory birds arriving every day in their most stunning plumage.  Are you ready to catch the floating hide passion? Maybe you just want to add some exciting new species to your portfolio?  Here’s your chance!

14/8 – 18/8 : Five days of floating hide photography. As one of the  first nature photographers to use a floating hide in Belgium and the Netherlands, I will teach you all the tricks of the trade, making sure you can add some stunning images to your portfolio.

19/8: Flight back home after one last hydrohide photography session.

The best conditions

Waterfowl arrive massively from their wintering grounds this time of year. Many move on after a while and even pass by our own country, where they are very hard to approach – let alone photograph from a floating hide. Slovenia removes all boundaries. The places where we enter the water are very natural and sheltered, attracting birds in abundance. You will capture many target species, but be prepared for surprising encounters! We’ll also bring hides to set up on land in case of strong wind, creating extra photo opportunities.

New surprises every day

Every birdwatcher knows there’s plenty to expect this time of year, when birds get ready for the breeding season. Local breeding birds start to mark their territory and court each other quite wildly: grebes, garganeys, ferruginous ducks, … Depending on the water level, many other species will be arriving such as spoonbills and several species of herons. You’ll discover an entire pallet of ducks such as goldeneye, pintail, Eurasian teal or common merganser. While little crakes and bluethroats are hiding in the reeds, ospreys fly by over the water.

Hydrohide: a unique experience

To approach waterfowl undisturbed and obtain a stunning point of view, we use hides that float on the water. A pair of waterproof waders allow us to walk in the pool, approaching birds from a hide inconspicuously.

Have you ever worked with a floating hide on one of my trips or workshops? Then you know that this is the best way to photograph birds. You can fully unleash your creativity, choosing your own light, distance, background, … and have your own hide. We’ll explore different ponds.

If this is new for you, count on an extensive initiation. Get ready for one of the greatest experiences you can have behind your lens!

A wide range of locations

On this trip, we explore the other side of Europe with its far more pristine nature. We have chosen some of the wildest areas for our floating hide adventure, where we are guaranteed not to be disturbed while photographing the birds surrounding us.

These swamps constitute a very dynamic habitat, attracting many beautiful bird species. There are many locations to choose from every day, depending on the water level.

Accommodation and transport

We’ll be staying in a local family hotel. Hot meals are very decent and transport is arranged by minibus.

Flights are not included in the price. We will contact you with a flight proposal as soon as the trip is guaranteed.

Clothing, condition and gear

We organise as many photography sessions as possible during this trip, which means early mornings in the water. We take a break at noon, and go back into the water in the late afternoon, where we remain until sunset. Dinner in our restaurant marks the end of our day.
Prepare for long days and full memory cards. Wading through the water can be comfortable in middle-level water, but more challenging with very low or higher water levels. As stated, there is a wide range of locations so we will vary a lot.
Take plenty of warm clothes on this trip. We’ll provide you with a list of needed materials and a pair of waders if you wish, but we advise every participant to bring their own waders.
